Creating a generative AI strategy for the enterprise

AI in the workplace is not new – in fact, as a society, our reliance on AI has grown over the past decade. Autocorrect, traditional chatbots, and Google’s algorithm are tools that rely on some form of artificial intelligence, and not much governance was needed to integrate those tools into most working environments.

ChatGPT and its advances in generative AI over the last two years were a tipping point, however. We’re seeing the possibilities for organizations to accelerate and strengthen their output at lightning speed, ushering in a new era of business that truly rewards those working smartest, not necessarily hardest.

To identify your starting point, start with evaluating where there is the most opportunity for improvement and driving value. Look at gaps in talent and resources, systems and departments that are underserved, and who among your workforce has the biggest impact on other teams and output. 

Generative AI will not be the best fit in situations where human judgment is critical, that requires creativity and innovation, or complex interpersonal interactions. Tasks requiring emotional intelligence, ethical judgment, or complex decision-making will always be best left to humans. 

How to integrate it well: 

Training and education are key; with generative AI, much of the effectiveness of these tools comes from how well humans are equipped to guide them. Getting your teams on board and aligning them behind the vision for this strategy is not only change leadership 101, it’s the most essential step in successful implementation. 

According to McKinsey, half of work activities across occupations could be automated by the mid-2040s due to Generative AI; you should start proactively preparing for this now. 

  • Training and education: Equip employees with the knowledge to work alongside AI. Help them understand how it works and what it does for them, so they can master the tools. 
  • Iterative implementation: Start small with AI projects and scale up as the organization adapts. Focus on a strategy that runs across your organization instead of one-off processes.
  • Be proactive in identifying risks and red flags: Your strategy should center around a human-in-the-loop framework, where you have humans at each pivotal step of the process to guarantee quality control and desired outcomes.

Because of the implications for employees, stakeholders, and consumers of your products or services, agility and attention to detail will be equally important in your approach. 

Everyone wants to be early adopters of the latest technology, but a failed early adoption is way worse than being later to implement. 

 

Ethical considerations in AI integration

While ethical considerations and governance are arguably the least exciting pieces of building a generative AI strategy, they are fundamental to its long-term success. Your AI strategy should focus heavily on the following: 

  • Transparency: Clearly communicate the use of AI within the organization; bring in people across your organization to verify it’s being used and driven in a way that protects the interest of everyone involved. 
  • Bias and fairness: Regularly audit AI systems to make certain they are free from biases.
  • Privacy and security: Implement robust security measures to protect sensitive data.
  • Employee well-being: With time freed up from manual tasks, focus on how employees can drive higher-level functions and tasks.
